Professional Doctorate

Following from the research methods MSc there is need for a further qualification that is equivalent to a standard PhD, but is more suited to the needs of a research methods professional. The idea is to provide the same type of degree that is common in other professional subjects, such as engineering. The proposed Maseno degree is based on the equivalent degree structure designed at the University of Reading.
The professional doctorate is an answer to the concern by employers that the conventional PhD is too narrow and does not prepare graduates for the challenges in their chosen career. The professional doctorate has three main components. The first is a series of challenges in diverse fields that correspond to the work done in support of research. The second is a broad review of an important area, and the third is a piece of original research, that is the equivalent of a year of full-time study, and which should lead to at least one paper in a refereed journal.
